The Purpose of Establishing the Committee
This research committee is founded on the Third Class Technical Committee on Microwave Simulators, which lasted for three sessions, and the Second Class Technical Committee on Microwave Simulators, which lasted for five sessions. The former third class committee advanced activities mainly related to microwave simulator development, and raised awareness among the members of this organization regarding the necessity of microwave simulators and their related issues by holding subcommittee meetings and open workshops. After transitioning to the second class committee, the range of activities expanded includes:
- Constructing a shared platform for microwave simulator development (including an API (application programming interface) and a plugin framework)
- Indicating standard issues for comparative inspections of each type of microwave simulator
- Providing educational materials for microwave simulator technicians (Eikichi Yamashita ed., Foundations for Making Microwave Simulators (published by IEICE))
- Discussing the possibility of utilizing the simulators in microwave education
- Information campaigns related to the above (research groups, workshops, lectures, general committee symposiums, homepage construction, etc.)
Along with continuing these various activities, we continued to provide members with periodic opportunities to learn about and discuss issues related to the microwave simulators.
However, roughly 15 years have passed since the establishment of this organization. In that time, the environment surrounding the microwave simulators has markedly changed, particularly with the rapid spread of commercial simulators in industry, government and academia, and the spread of the microwave technology into a variety of adjacent fields. Regarding the former, we should note that commercial simulator performance continues to advance while their prices continue to fall, and there is an increasing need to disseminate information not only to simulator makers, but also to simulator users. Regarding the latter, we should note the rapid increase in demand for microwave technology and simulator technology in fields such as EMC (electromagnetic compatibility), digital signal transmission, wireless power transmission, MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical systems), and microwave chemistry.
In order to respond to the increase and diversification in demand for the microwave simulators, this committee must continue to expand activities based on the position as a first class research committee, increases the visibility, and contributes to the vitalization of this field. Specifically,
- Continue to expand the existing activities listed above.
- Provide a specialized space for exchanging opinions on simulation techniques and simulator software composition.
- Provide a space for exchanging opinions related to simulation technology that combines microwaves with adjacent technological fields (communication systems, digital signal transmission, multi-physics with machines/chemistry/heat, etc.).
- Activities directed to developing an educational microwave simulator custom to the committee
In this fashion, we will play a role as a “mediator” for exchange and fusion between different fields through expanding activities specialized for the simulation technology related to existing first class researches (microwaves, electromagnetic field theory, electronic devices, antennas/propagation, electromagnetic compatibility, etc.) in addition to our current microwave simulation activities.
Fields of Research
Simulation technology and techniques related to general electronic engineering (electromagnetic waves, circuits, semiconductors, systems, etc.), simulation acceleration technology, comparative inspections of existing simulators (indicating standard issues, etc.), combined simulation technology (multi-physics simulations with electromagnetic waves and machines/chemistry/heat), shared platform simulator technology, constructing electromagnetic field analysis simulators for technology education
Chairman's Message
I am Shinichiro Onuki from Nihon University, taking over as chairman as of June 2020. Thank you very much for your continued support of the Technical Committee on Electronics Simulation Technology's various activities. On behalf of the committee, I would like to communicate the status of EST research activities.
Simulations using computers are widely used at sites developing everything from systems and devices to electronic components. We have recently gone beyond the conventional frameworks of circuit/electromagnetic field/light/heat/fluid simulations, focusing on predicting various risks and safety concerns, as well as combining research with machine learning and deep learning. EST Research focuses on foundational technology across all electronics fields such as the design and development of microwaves, as well as terahertz, light/quantum, and electromagnetic devices. It is essential from the perspective of testing via simulations of device operations and novel physical phenomena, and quantitative testing of ingenious ideas. Recently, multi-physics and multi-scale simulations have come to the fore, with the intention of working on scale expansion and target combination for analysis. In tandem, we have improved the optimization design, calculation precision and efficiency per simulation, and optimized technology for various computer platforms every year.
In 2020, ten years after the founding of the EST Technical Committee, we unexpectedly experienced the novel coronavirus pandemic. All the Technical Committee Conferences had to be held online, while research and education activities at universities had strict entry requirements. Because research using actual machines in person was severely limited, we recognized the utility and practicality of remote simulations once more. In addition, we discovered that simulations can be useful learning tools in this context, where it was difficult to conduct student experiments in person.
In EST Technical Committee, besides the development and provision of simulation technology, we have served as a large pillar for researcher development by striving to sustain activities of EST Technical Committee. In addition to the usual recognition of young researchers, we held the first Technical Committee Conference on research paper guidance for students in May of 2020. All four applications were accepted by the IEICE Transactions on Electronics (Japanese Edition) in May 2021 by involving researchers with outstanding achievements in research paper writing and providing a forum for students to discuss their papers. This project seeks to contribute to the development of young researchers in the industry and college students. Recently, research fields have specialized, which has resulted in the division of academic society activities. In EST Technical Committee, we host joint Technical Committee Conferences to foster collaboration with related fields. To contribute to cross-disciplinary activities in this organization, we would like to further strengthen our ties with related Technical Committees, with simulations serving as our axis point. We sincerely look forward to engagement from those interested in technological fields, and presentations of research on simulations.
