Kunio Kashino
2021 President of the Information and Systems Society

The Information and Systems Society (ISS) of the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE) is an academic community for researchers and engineers from a wide range of fields related to information technology and systems. The IEICE has a history of more than 100 years in Japan; the ISS, a quarter of a century.
In recent years, the world’s expectations for information science and systems technology have been increasing rapidly. The issues to be solved by ISS members are becoming larger, more diverse and more complex.
In this age of information overload, researchers and engineers need to be able to efficiently gather reliable information to support their work, and then broadly disseminate their results in order to advance the state of the art. Learning new things from unexpected sources, meeting unexpected colleagues in various fields and gaining exposure to fresh perspectives is increasingly valuable. Contributions to the international R & D communities are more important than ever.
The role of the ISS must also evolve to meet the needs of the times. Core ISS activities, such as technical committees, conferences, publishing, and international activities are under review by the Steering Committee in order to keep them relevant for today’s members. Together, we can ensure ISS continues fulfilling its role of nurturing the dreams of all researchers and engineers, young and old alike. We look forward to your continued support and cooperation.
