招待講演: Beyond Silhouettes: Multimodal and Health-Aware Gait Biometrics

Manuel J. Marín–Jiménez received the BSc, MSc and PhD degrees from the University of Granada, Spain. He has worked, as a visiting student, at the Computer Vision Center of Barcelona (Spain), Vislab–ISR/IST of Lisboa (Portugal) and the Visual Geometry Group of Oxford (UK). He has published more than 90 technical papers at journals and international conferences. Currently, he works as Full Professor at the University of Cordoba (Spain). His research interests include object detection, human-centric video understanding and machine learning.

Gait recognition has traditionally been approached through binary silhouette sequences, yet this representation can limit robustness in unconstrained conditions. In this keynote, I will discuss recent advances from our group that explore alternative and complementary modalities, with a focus on optical flow and human pose. I will present how pose-based representations, ranging from hierarchical 2D keypoints to dense body surface maps, achieve competitive or superior accuracy to silhouettes on standard benchmarks, and how multimodal fusion strategies can mitigate the effect of missing or degraded inputs.

Building on these developments, I will turn to gait’s potential for health-aware analysis. Using the Health&Gait dataset, which combines video-derived gait descriptors with detailed anthropometric and gait-parameter measurements, we have examined links between walking patterns and physical health indicators.

Across both themes, I will highlight the methodological choices, empirical findings, and limitations that shape robust and interpretable gait analysis, whether the goal is secure identification or early health assessment.
