A wideband and planar 4 x 4 pentagonal patch array antenna using an FR-4 substrate is proposed for breast cancer detection. The antenna was designed by considering the effect of human body. The measured and calculated frequency characteristics of S-parameters match very well. The amplitude of reflection coefficient was less than -5 dB for frequency range more than 2.2 GHz. Good linear frequency dependence of phase can be observed, which will not cause serious distortion in waveforms.
