Osamu HASHIMOTO

Dr. Osamu Hashimoto earned his master’s degree at the Graduate School of the University of Electro-Communications in 1978 and joined Toshiba Corporation in April that same year. In 1981, he moved to the Technical Research and Development Agency of the Defense Agency. He completed his doctoral degree at the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, Tokyo Institute of Technology, in 1986. He joined Aoyama Gakuin University in 1991 and became a professor in the Faculty of Science and Engineering in 1997, where he has achieved remarkable accomplishments in both education and research. He served as Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering and Director of the Graduate School in 2012, and as Vice President in 2019. Even after becoming Professor Emeritus in 2022, he continues to mentor the next generation as a Visiting Professor and Project Professor.

He has achieved pioneering results in the research, development, and practical application of radio wave absorbers in the microwave and millimeter-wave bands. In particular, by systematizing measurement techniques for radio wave absorbers, establishing advanced methods for measuring material constants, and integrating optimization design methods based on electromagnetic field analysis, he was the first in the world to develop a wide-band, ultra-light resistive film-type radio wave absorber. These achievements have been applied to a wide range of applications, including ETC systems, wireless LANs, radar, and near-field electromagnetic field absorption, and have had a broad impact not only in electronics and information and communications but also in architecture. Specifically, the radio wave absorber technology for ETC systems has contributed significantly to the practical implementation and widespread adoption of ETC systems in Japan and plays a vital role as a social infrastructure technology.

Furthermore, in the field of research on radio wave absorbers and high-frequency material measurement technology, he actively disseminated his research results through international conferences and specialized journals, and accumulated systematic knowledge through numerous papers and explanatory articles. These achievements demonstrate Japan’s international research standards in this field, significantly contributing to the promotion of research exchange and the establishment and development of an academic foundation. They also serve as an important reference for researchers both in Japan and abroad, providing guidance for research in this field. Furthermore, they promote technological development in related industries and contribute significantly to societal implementation.

These research achievements have been recognized with numerous awards, including the IEICE Best Paper Award, the Achievement Award, the Distinguished Achievement and Contributions Award, and the Electronics Society Award, as well as the IEEJ Achievement Award and the Asia-Pacific Microwave Conference (APMC) 2006 Prize, all of which attest to the significance of his academic contributions.

Furthermore, he has an outstanding track record as an educator, having trained and produced numerous talented individuals—including 28 doctoral and 229 master’s degree recipients—who have gone on to contribute to both industry and academia. In addition, he has made significant contributions to the systematization and dissemination of this field through his many publications, including specialized books such as "Introduction to Radio Wave Absorbers," "Introduction to FDTD Time-Domain Finite Difference Method," and "Fundamentals of Numerical Computation with Python."

In terms of social contribution, he has served on various committees of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, actively leading the standardization of radio wave absorber technology and advancing radio wave utilization policies. Within IEICE, he held key roles such as Chair of the Technical Committee on Microwaves, founder and Chair of the Technical Committee on EST, Chair of the Domestic Committee for APMC of the International Conference, and President of the Electronics Society, making significant leadership contributions to academic development and strengthening its international presence.

As described above, Dr. Osamu Hashimoto has made an exceptionally significant contribution to the IEICE and to the advancement of related fields through his original research achievements, outstanding social contributions, and his dedicated efforts in fostering the next generation of researchers and managing the academic conference. Therefore, we hereby recommend him for the position of Honorary Member of the IEICE.
