Distinguished Educational Practitioners Award
Promotion and Standardization of Education in Computer Graphics and Visualization Technologies
Dr. Issei Fujishiro withdrew from the doctoral program at the Graduate School of Engineering, University of Tsukuba in 1985 after obtaining his master's degree. He subsequently served as a Research Associate at the Faculty of Science, The University of Tokyo; a Lecturer at the University of Tsukuba in 1989; and an Associate Professor and later Professor at Ochanomizu University starting in 1991. Following his period as a Professor at Tohoku University in 2004, he was appointed as a Professor at Keio University in 2009. During this period, he also served as a Visiting Professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, developing his educational and research activities from a global perspective.
Dr. Fujishiro specializes in computer graphics (CG) and visualization technologies. Leveraging his specialized expertise, he has made significant contributions to the establishment of a domestic educational framework aligned with the Computer Science Curriculum 2023 (CS2023), an international standard, and to the qualitative improvement of human resource development in Japan. He has actively worked on organizing academic systems and promoting awareness, such as authoring the section on video media in the "100-Year History of the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers."
Serving as a council member and chair of the Education Promotion Committee at the Computer Graphic Arts Society (CG-ARTS) for many years, Dr. Fujishiro played a central role in formulating the current standard CG educational curriculum starting in 1999. As a culmination of these efforts, he served as Editor-in-Chief for the textbooks "Computer Graphics" and "Visual Information Processing," making an extremely significant contribution to the advancement of the field of CG. These books cover a wide range of topics from geometric modeling to rendering and image processing, and their educational impact on researchers and engineers across various fields is immeasurable. With a cumulative circulation exceeding 180,000 copies for both old and new editions, these books have remained steadfast standard texts adopted by numerous universities, vocational schools, and corporations nationwide for 20 years since their publication.
Furthermore, in his educational practice, he led Keio University to be registered as a certified educational institution for CG-ARTS examinations. Under his leadership, the university has been recognized as an "Excellent School" for 14 consecutive years, producing a total of 451 successful "Expert" level candidates, demonstrating his outstanding teaching achievements. Due to these accomplishments, he was inducted into the IEEE Visualization Academy in 2021 as the only Japanese member and received the Keio Award in 2025, earning extremely high acclaim both domestically and internationally.
For these reasons, Dr. Issei Fujishiro's contributions to the promotion and standardization of education in computer graphics and visualization technologies are worthy of the Society's Distinguished Educational Practitioners Award, and we are pleased to nominate him for this award.
