Takashi Ohira received his D.E. degree from Osaka University in Communications Engineering in 1983, and immediately joined Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation. The Public Corporation was privatized and became Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) in 1985. He became a Senior Researcher in the Satellite Communications Department of NTT Laboratories in 1987, and then a Senior Researcher and a Supervisor in the same department, before becoming Group Leader in 1998. In 1999, he moved to Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International (ATR). He served as a Senior Researcher at ATR Adaptive Communication Laboratories, and was promoted to be Section Chief. In 2005, he was appointed as Executive Officer of ATR and Director of ATR Wave Engineering Laboratories. He then became a Professor at Toyohashi University of Technology in 2007, and has served as Director of the Future Vehicle City Research Center since 2015. In 2021, he became Professor Emeritus at Toyohashi University of Technology and continued his research activities. Currently he sits on the boards of directors at Fujiwaves and Power Wave.
At NTT, he was involved for many years in research on and development of satellite transponders, and designed GaAs MMICs, which were installed on the geostationary communications satellite Sakura-4 (CS-4) and the engineering test satellites Kiku-6 (ETS-VI) and Kiku-8 (ETS-VIII). At ATR, he created the electronically steerable parasitic array radiator antenna or ESPAR antenna. At Toyohashi University of Technology, he established resonant Q theory and generalized kQ theory through research on wireless power transmission, and led the establishment of a university venture for the practical application of wireless power transmission systems based on these theories. He participated in the Strategic Innovation Creation Program of the Cabinet Office of Japan to apply wireless power transmission to drone charging, contributing to the development of related fields and fostering many young researchers.
He has made numerous contributions in engineering societies. He worked to establish the Technical Committee on Wireless Power Transmission in IEICE, and has served as IEEE Distinguished Lecturer, IEEE MTT-S Kansai Chapter Founder, IEEE MTT-S Nagoya Chapter Founder, URSI Fellow, IEICE Fellow, IEEE Life Fellow, Advisor on IEICE Technical Committee on Microwaves, Honorary Advisor on APMC National Committee, and in many other roles.
For these academic achievements and contributions to academic and educational communities, he received a Commendation from the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in 2017, and a Commendation from the Director-General of the Tokai Bureau of Telecommunications in 2018. He has also received many awards from IEICE, including the Young Researcher’s Award in 1986, the Electronics Society Award in 2004, the Educational Service Award in 2017, the Distinguished Educational Practitioners Award in 2020, the Top Downloaded Letter Award in 2020, the ComEx Best Letter Award in 2022, and the Distinguished Achievement and Contributions Award in 2024.
As outlined above, he has made outstanding contributions to research and development in the field of wireless communications, as well as to research and education in the new research field of wireless power transmission. He has also made significant contributions to research and development in the corporate world as well as to education at universities and activities in engineering societies in Japan and worldwide. Therefore, I nominate him for consideration as an Honorary Fellow of IEICE.
