Distinguished Achievement and Contributions Award
Dr. Tadayoshi Enomoto graduated with a doctorate (Ph.D.) from Ohio State University in 1975. From 1975, he worked for 17 years at NEC Central Research Laboratories, sequentially as a chief, section manager, and department head, where he was involved in the research and development of large-scale integrations (LSIs) and the systems to which these LSIs are applied. From 1992, he served for 22 years as a Professor at Chuo University's Faculty of Science and Engineering and Graduate School, where he contributed to research and education in the same field. Since 2014, he has been a Professor Emeritus at Chuo University, where he continues his research in this field.
In preparation for the coming age of multimedia centered on video, he engaged in research and practical application of the LSIs and systems that play such a critical role in that technology. He achieved numerous pioneering accomplishments and contributed to the academic development of this field and the creation of new markets.
In the 1980s, signal processing LSI was applied only to voice processing, and no design theory or methodology had been established to improve its performance. To solve this problem, he established various fundamental technologies, including LSI architecture, high-speed and low-power circuits, high-speed and parallel graphics algorithms, vector arithmetic methods, data matching technology, and LSI manufacturing technology. At the same time, he has developed and commercialized a range of technologies and systems: the world's first graphics processing unit (GPU) and an online videoconferencing system that incorporates this GPU; a sampling coding scheme optimized for gated clocks and a high-speed GPU that incorporates this scheme; a coding scheme specialized for dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) and a low-power GPU implementing this scheme; the world's first practical vector arithmetic processor and an air-cooled supercomputer implementing this processor; a destination-matching processor and an ultra-high-speed LAN system that incorporates this processor; the world's largest capacity dictionary search processor; an ultra-compact leakage current reduction circuit and a nonvolatile memory implementing this circuit; and stacked three-dimensional devices. These achievements have contributed to the creation of the multimedia age and the development of the internet market.
Dr. Enomoto has held a number of important positions. The posts he held in the IEICE include Chairman of the Technical Committee on Integrated Circuits and Devices, Chairman of the Technical Committee on Electron Devices, and Chairman of the Editorial Board of Small Special Issues in IEICE Transactions (English version). He was also a member of the Editorial Board of the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Transactions, a member of the Nomination Committee for the Japan Prize, and an expert member for the Intellectual Property High Court. Of particular significance was his role as the first Secretary and the fourth Chairman of the Technical Committee on Integrated Circuits and Devices, where he laid the foundations for the committee's activities and made it one of the most active technical committees in the IEICE. He was also involved in the creation of the LSI and Systems Workshop and developed it into one of the leading conferences in Japan. He has also devoted himself to the education of students and has sent many excellent students on to work in the industry. He has been recognized as a leader in his field, publishing his achievements in technical papers and receiving coverage in newspapers, speaking at international conferences, and registering patents. He has contributed to the development of integrated circuit technology and the cultivation of human resources by publishing practical-level technical books, such as CMOS Integrated Circuits (Baifukan), Nano-CMOS Integrated Circuits (Baifukan), and Image LSI System Design Technology (Corona Publishing Co., Ltd.).
For these achievements, he has received many academic accolades, including the IEICE Achievement Award, the IEICE Best Paper Award, the IEEE Best Paper Award, the IEEE ASP-DAC Best Design Award, the Telecommunications Advancement Foundation Award (Telecom System Technology Award), and an Ohio State University Fellowship. In addition, he was named an IEICE Fellow, an IEEE Fellow, and an IEEE Life Fellow.
As outlined above, Dr. Enomoto’s contributions to the IEICE and the field of electronics, information and communication are truly outstanding, and I am confident that he would be a worthy recipient of the IEICE Distinguished Achievement and Contributions Award.
