Area: Singapore Representative: Professor Le-Wei(Joshua)Li (National University of Singapore)

First of all, I am pleased to be nominated by technical pioneer(s) in Japan and then appointed by the IEICE as one of the present four Overseas Area Representatives, representing the IEICE Singapore area. As one of the commitments to the professional societies, I would try my best to do this work well to better serve our IEICE members in Singapore. And I also wish to extend my service to Johore,

Malaysia, one of my neighboring places, in my best capacity. Although the number of IEICE members in Singapore area is not very big, I wish the services extended to our members will be remarkable in the future.

Being well known internationally, the IEICE has become globalized after her fast growing in the last several decades. In a similar fashion to IEEE, the IEICE has been expanding her globalization or internationalization in many aspects. These include a) the publications of various transactions in English, b) the establishment of English Special Session in this year's IEICE annual meeting, and c) active participations in, and even organization of, various international conferences and symposia in the Asia-Pacific region. It is evident that the IEICE has been playing her more and more important and leading role in the technical activities in the areas of electrical, electronic, computer, and communication systems engineering. Due to her fast growth, the IEICE has attract-ed many new overseas members (outside of Japan) of many nationalities. It is my hope that the IEICE will continue

*
to attract more and new members so as to maintain the fast speed of growth,
*
to influence worldwide with high impacts to, and even to pioneer, the science and technology development in the related areas, and
*
to further her globalization not only in language but also in organization and management.

As the first Overseas Area Representative in Singapore, I hereby announce that we would provide a few services within the IEICE allocated budgets, namely,

*
Members can access to IEICE Transactions in both Japanese and English in the form of either hard copy or CD-ROM. Members can approach me for the materials, provided that the IEICE copy-right policy stands.
*
We will also have one or two meetings per year subject to the necessity of both technical and social activities requirement.
*
In addition, we plan to have some technical talks. We will invite a couple of Japanese professionals in frontier research & development or so called =cd=b867IEICE Distinguished Lecturers" to deliver a seminar series on common hot topics to local members of our Singapore area.

I anticipate your active participation and intensive involvement in our area activities and look forward to meeting you soon.

Form the list of the IEICE members in Singapore provided by the IEICE Headquarter (HQ), I realized that some of you did not provide the HQ with your email address, and also some of you have changed your email addresses but did not update them with HQ. In both cases, please update your contacting addresses with HQ and send me your contacting (including email) addresses at the following address:

You are welcome to visit my personal home page for more information about myself. In addition to the society management service, I could also offer the professional or technical service to our members on behalf of the IEICE. In this connection, please feel free to contact me for any IEICE related service. The IEICE Singapore Section is one of a few small families out of Japan, based on the big family (i.e., the IEICE HQ). Within this family, we need to understand, cooperate, and support to, each other. Let us work closely together to make a strong and brilliant small family in Singapore.
