IEICE in the Largest IT Market.
Chinese IT industry has been
achieving a great progress in the past 20 years since China opened the door to
the world, especially a dramatic growth in the recent 5 years. Now, China is the
No.1 telecommunication market in the world with 229 million PSTN telephone users,
226 million mobile phone users, 90 million CATV terminals, and 50 million Internet
users. In the meantime, the growth rate of the Internet has also been exceeding
100% in the recent years. Furthermore, Beijing 2008 Olympic as well as Shanghai
2010 Expo has been becoming two big pushes and opportunities for the growth of
Chinese economy. Of course, the information industry will play an essential role
for this fast growth. That is to say the Chinese IT market has been and will continue
to be one of the largest IT market in the world.

Based on the above-mentioned
reasons, more and more worldwide famous IT companies including Fujitsu, Hitachi,
Matsushita, NEC, etc. have been coming to China. At the first beginning (1980s),
however, China was only considered as the mass production base with cheap labor
expense. But recently, more and more companies have started to open R&D labs
in China or to establish R&D cooperation relationship with local universities
or research institutes.

Such a situation change has greatly increased the
human exchange between Japanese and Chinese research engineers.

|
As the 4th
large group of IEICE Overseas Membership, IEICE Beijing area holds over 100 oversea
members across the country. Although this is not a big number compared with 1.3
billion population, we believe it can be a good starting point for our future
work. How to promote the IEICE in Beijing, including its vicinity, and therefore
attract more and more registered members will be our major task in the coming
two years. Specifically, we have been or are planning to

establish a mailing list of all the IEICE members
in Beijing, including its vicinity, for the information exchange among members; |

(2)
|
open a specific booth in Tsinghua University for
the display of IEICE Journals/Transactions and provide on-demand copy service
to registered members only; |

(3)
|
organize seminars or distinguished lectures not
less than twice a year to educate young students and engineers as well as to promote
the IEICE; |
|
(4)
|
technically co-sponsor selected domestic conferences
or symposia to promote the IEICE; |
|
(5)
|
provide any other specific services on demand to
our members.
