TJMW2023 Student Design Competition

TJMW will be hosting a Student Design Competition (SDC). The main objective of this event is to encourage students to have interests in the microwave engineering and to experience challenges in practical hardware designs and measurements. Competitors are required to design, construct, and measure prototype circuits under the conditions of the pre-determined design requirements.

Guidelines

In TJMW2023 SDC, a new type event is planned. In the traditional SDC, each team had to design, fabricate, and test the component based on the contest rule in advance. But in the TJMW2023 SDC, the students have no need to prepare in advance. Students just attend, and listen the lecture of the basics. Then they design and make the circuit, finally measure the circuit. Each team makes a 2.45 GHz rectifier, but just only need is to design a matching circuit by using the Smith chart. So there are no need to have the experience or knowledge of the microwave rectifier.

  1. Topic of work

2.45GHz band rectifier on printed circuit board (PCB)

  2. Deadline for the registration of SDC
All students participating in TJMW2023, especially those in their first or second year of lab assignment, are eligible to participate in this SDC event. Pre-registration must be completed before
Dec. 6 2023 from the following link.

    Please fill this Pre-registration form.

Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Please register as early as possible, as you may not be able to participate if the number of applicants exceeds the number of places available.

  3. Registration fee for SDC
Participation in this event is free of charge.
  4. Schedule
This event will be held in the afternoon of the second day.
  5. Prize
All teams will be ranked based on the evaluation criteria that will be shown in the envent. The winner will be recognized at the award ceremony in the final day, and will receive the TJMW2023 Student Design Competition Prize. The winners of the prize get prize money. All students participating in the SDC are requested to attend the awards ceremony. Absentees of the award ceremony may not receive their prize money!
    • 1st prize: 3000THB (TBD)
    • 2nd prize: 2000THB (TBD)
    • 3rd prize: 1000THB (TBD)
  6. More details of the SDC
TJMW2023 organizing committee will prepare all equipment for design, fabrication and measurement. So the students have no need to bring any items for this SDC. Attendees for the SDC have no need for preparation in advance. On the day of the SDC, just attend, and make a rectifier based on a lecture, then measure output DC voltage from the rectifier!
Nationality mixed team will be created by SDC chairs before the SDC (around 3 or 4 persons for each team). Each team design, fabricate, and measure a 2.45GHz rectifier that will be made by the team. Team members must cooperate each other for all activities. Deep teamwork is key to make a good rectifier.
Part number of the Schottky diode will be announced on the day. Basics of the micriwaove rectifier will be lectured by the SDC chairs. Core circuit of the rectifier shown by the SDC chairs must not be modified by the team. So the team should design just only a LC matching circuit based on the lumped component. Matched complex impedance is also announced in the lecture. Smith chart is used for the matching circuit design. Drawing tools such as a compass, ruler will be also prepaired by the organizing committee. Series/parallel inductor/capacitor topologies will be allowed for the matching circuit design. Distributed component based topologies such as open/short stubs, quarter wavelength transformer must not be used.
The single layer PCB and copper tape are used to create the transmission line layout on top. The configuration and layout of LC matching is freestyle. 1608 (metric) size Chip capacitors, chip inductors will be used for the fabrication. These chip components, diode, SMA conntector, and lead wire will be soldered by each team (handmade). All circuit elements including a Schottky diode and other items for rectifier circuit should be placed on the PCB.
After the fabrication, the rectifier will be measured. Under the condition of fixed input power level and load resistance, output DC voltage is measured. Each team is ranked in the order of the highest voltage obtained.
If the matching circuit design is not completed within the specified time, students make a rectifier of the reference design that will be shown in the lecture on site.
More details will be lectured on the day!
