In order to catch up with a recent rapid growth of the Internet traffic, intensive efforts have been made to expand the fiber capacity of backbone systems from several Tera bit/s to Peta bit/s range, as well as the Exa bit/s network throughput. To reach these goals, a hardware paradigm shift is strongly required to overcome the fundamental capacity limitations with current photonic technologies. This workshop is aimed at highlighting innovative optical communication technologies for breaking the technological barriers. Specifically, recent progress in advanced fiber, amplification and transmission technologies are presented by five invited speakers from Asia and Pacific areas, followed by panel discussions for exchanging ideas and visions of future optical communication systems.
