Summary:
"Space division multiplexing (SDM) technology has been paid attention as the one of the methodology to expand the capacity of the submarine cable networks. Many research papers have been published for the SDM transmission technologies using multi-core fibers and multi-core erbium doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) [1] [2], and most of these papers describe the transmission performance in the optimal designs and conditions. In reality, submarine cable systems would experience cable faults and repeater ageing during the life time of 25 years. When a cable faults occurs, additional loss due to cable repair induces decrease of optical input power to the neighboring repeater. Also, repeater ageing such as a pumping power degradation generates changes of amplification performances of EDFA. However, the effect to the system performance by these condition changes of the multi-core EDFAs has been discussed less. In this paper, we verify the variations of gain shape, gain tilt and noise figure as a function of optical input power to an uncoupled 7-core EDFA. We also clarify the amplification performance by changing the pump LD?fs power and discuss the difference between single-core EDFA and multi-core EDFA from the system performance perspective viewpoint. Finally, we evaluated the gain profile and received OSNR after a long-haul transmission by using a re-circulating loop test-bed as shown in Figure 1."
