Summary:
We fabricated an uncoupled four-core fiber (U4CF) and confirmed that four cores with an effective area (Aeff) of 88-89 ??m2 can be packed in a standard 125-??m cladding. The transmission losses were low 0.169- 0.172 dB/km at a wavelength of 1550 nm. The losses are the lowest ever-reported among a standard-cladding diameter uncoupled multicore optical fibers (MCFs) with four cores or more. The crosstalks (XTs) between adjacent cores were also low at -46dB per 100km at a wavelength of 1550 nm. These results show U4CF has the potential for long-haul high-capacity transmissions.
