Summary:
Mode dependent loss (MDL) is a major factor limiting the capacity of mode division multiplexing transmission. To measure the MDL caused by a splice point in two-mode fibers, we have proposed a Brillouin gain analysis based technique that can obtain the losses for the LP11 mode [1, 2]. This technique uses the difference between the Brillouin frequency shifts (BFS) of LP modes [3]. In this work, we investigate the splice loss for the LP11 mode with respect to the core offset value using the proposed technique and discuss the measurement accuracy.
