Summary:
Uncertainty profiles are behavioral indexes that can be easily determined for a given CA cell structure and neighborhood, as a nonlinear relationship between the probability of a cell to be in state "1" when the probabilities of the neighbor cells in the previous iterations are known. They allow to predict the nature of CA dynamics without the need to effectively simulate the dynamics. This paper reviews the method of uncertainty profile as a method for designing for emergence and exemplifies it first time for CAs with 5 cells neighborhoods. The predictive power of this method is demonstrated in conjunction with other recent methods for nonlinear analysis and classification of CA dynamics.
