Summary:
Spiral waves have been observed in many systems including the brain cortex. However, the func- tional role of spiral waves in the cortex is unknown. In the primary visual cortex, neurons are arranged in pinwheel- like patterns according to their orientation selectivities. We show that spiral waves and spike-timing-dependent plastic- ity of synapses form this pinwheel structure.
