Summary:
Chaotic time series generated by nonlinear dynamics are often used as pseudorandom numbers for cryptography. Here, we show a method for time series analysis to characterize complexities in chaotic dynamics in terms of string entropy, as a class of information entropy, estimated from the relative frequencies of binary-coded characters transformed from chaotic time series. We apply our method to various chaotic time series and discuss their performance as pseudorandom numbers for chaos-based cryptography.
