Summary:
It is known that sound signals dominated by howling noise have a large amplitude and a stable phase delay at a specific frequency. However, conventional howling cancellers focus only on the amplitude information. This paper proposes a howling canceller based on phase delay information. First, the group delay of the signal including howling is analyzed by short-time Fourier transform, and is determined that the variance of the group delay at the howling frequency is smaller than that at the speech signal frequency. Next, a new howling cancellation system is designed by introducing the variation in the group delay into the formula used to update adaptive notch filter. Finally, it is demonstrated via simulation that the proposed howling canceller can more effectively remove howling than can conventional howling cancellation methods.
