Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The increasing demand for viewing wide-field-of-view (WFOV) video content can be seen in the development of recent WFOV video technologies such as the Ladybug and Theta panoramic camera systems. To watch WFOV content remotely via the interne, network bandwidth considerations must be considered to balance the quality of the viewing experience with the large data size required. We have proposed an interactive panoramic video viewing system that delivers high quality images for only a viewer's current watching region. While this approach enables both bandwidth efficiency and high video quality, there is a required wait time of a few seconds in order to display the higher quality video. According to previous user comments, this wait time can lower viewer satisfaction in viewing WFOV videos. This paper proposes a pseudo-haptic inspired effect in order to alleviate the perception of the required waiting time. A prototype VR HMD-based panoramic video viewing system using the proposed effect was developed and tested in a preliminary experiment. We discuss the results and provide suggestions for how the effect can be used in different contexts for future studies.
