Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Analyzing IP packets captured from network is an effective way to monitor the quality of a service experienced by users. For request-response style services such as web services, response time of user-operations can be measured by analyzing IP packets in application protocol layer and extracting request/response messages. On an encrypted application protocol such as HTTPS, however, it is unable to distinguish between communications generated by users' operations and that mechanically generated by the service such as long polling. Therefore, if we calculate response time from all communications including ones for long polling, it becomes a problem that the waiting time on server side for long polling makes the calculated response time greatly differ from user experienced one. In this paper, we introduce a novel method to measure user experienced response time of a service on an encrypted application protocol by identifying and eliminating long polling communications mechanically generated without relation to user operations. In the method, long polling communications are identified through the use of distinguishing patterns on estimated request/response messages when time-out occurs. Experimental evaluations on an in-house groupware/mail service confirm the method can measure response time which well fits to user experience.
