Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Various techniques have been proposed for improving the computation performance so far, where correct computations have been always expected. Recently, however, we observe that some errors would be acceptable depending on the applications, e.g., image and audio processing whose output is perceived by human's five sense. In this paper, exploiting such features of acceptable errors or approximate computing, we propose an architecture which reduces the instructions to be executed. Focusing on the fact that many applications for which approximate computing can be applied contain loop structures, we explore the chance of reusing results computed in the previous iteration if the input data to the loop is close enough between the previous and current iterations. The structure is realized by using a small memory called Lookup Table. In our evaluation, our technique was applied to a single-core MIPS processor on Xilinx FPGA Zynq XC7Z045-2, which demonstrated good speedup with small area overhead (i.e., an increase in registers by 1.0% and LUTs by 2.9%).
