Development of an IEEE 802.11ah SDK-based WLAN Prototype

Abstract(in English) We introduce an IEEE 802.11ah wireless LAN (WLAN) prototype using software-defined radio (SDR) components and identify the transmission performance of such WLANs operating in the 920MHz industry, scientific and medical (ISM) radio-band. The IEEE 802.11ah WLAN prototype is required to investigate the usefulness of M2M applications through experimental over-the-air tests. However, the IEEE 802.11ah standardization is under way; thus, no IEEE 802.11ah WLAN modules are available yet. We propose an IEEE 802.11ah WLAN prototype by utilizing universal software radio peripheral (USRP) and GNU Radio that is suggested by numerous researches in the wireless domain. To evaluate communication performance of our prototype, including the hardware and software characteristics, we measured IEEE 802.11ah based transmit signals. Further, we report on the achieved UDP throughput performance and the successful sensor/video transmission in our 2x2 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) IEEE 802.11ah WLAN prototype.
