Improvement of Color2Gray Algorithm by Consideration of Local Variance

Abstract(in English) In usual color-to-gray conversion of color images, the lightness component of an input color image is assigned to gray level of an output monochrome image. However, features in an input color image is sometimes lost because three-dimension data which is RGB color components is converted into one-dimensional gray level. In this report, a new color-to-gray conversion which attaches importance to the local contrast improvement is proposed. The proposed method evaluates the local contrast by computing the local variance of pixel values in an input color image. Experiments show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
