Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This paper describes a small-size hetero-core fiber optic nerve tactile sensor superior for detecting tactile information of materials. Tactile sensing technology has been expected to be utilized in robotics and medical applications. In our laboratory, a novel fiber-optic nerves technology has been proposed for smart structures by used of hetero-core fiber optic sensors. The hetero-core fiber optic sensor consists of two optical fibers with different core diameters with fusion splicing, with an attractive feature of its high sensitivity to soft bending on a sensor portion. The sensing performance of the fabricated tactile sensor was confirmed to be superior to object recognition through two types of experiments for evaluating the force property and the response to tactile information of surface shape and hardness.
