Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | Previous studies on a habituation switch paradigm have shown that, by 12 months of age, infants can rapidly form a word-object association, indicating the onset of word learning in early infancy (e.g., Curtin, 2009; Werker et al., 1999). To better understand the development of the word-learning ability, the present study focused on sound-effect words to examine Japanese-learning 12-month-olds' ability to associate the sound-effect words with novel objects under the habituation switch paradigm. Results showed that the 12-month-olds failed to form a strong word-object association when hearing sound-effect words, suggesting that infants at the earliest stage of lexical development might differentiate normal type of words from sound-effect words in the context of word learning. |
