Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) To keep up with the exponential growth of demand for broadband internet traffic, large capacity transmission systems with digital coherent technology have started operation recently. The major challenge in such systems is to improve optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR). In order to improve OSNR, optical fibers with low loss and large effective area (Aeff) are strongly demanded. This paper review historical improvement of fiber loss and today's low loss fiber technologies. We also present pure-silica-core fiber (PSCF) with the record-low loss of 0.149 dB/km, and discuss its quantitative contribution to OSNR improvement based on fiber figure-of-merit (FOM).
