An Interactive System for Pronunciation Assessment of Japanese Geminates Using Android Devices and Its Evaluation

Abstract(in English) This paper describes an interactive system for pronunciation assessment of Japanese geminates using Android devices. The system can efficiently gather learner's voice by using the devices as interface, and assess a score of pronunciation between 0 and 100 points utilizing normalized duration estimated by the phoneme recognition technology. Also, it has two learning modes such as practice and testing. In the practice mode, an assessment score and an image of geminates are displayed to improve pronunciation ability for every utterance. In the testing mode, utterances of answers to several questions by using synthesized speech are interactively assessed. In the evaluation experiment for the system, about 85% is collect judgments for geminates in speech uttered by 55 students in USA. Then, the system is effective for pronunciation assessment.
