| 抄録(和) | 本講演では、主に大学生・大学院生・若手研究者を対象として、ネットワーク性能評価の基礎を説明する。情報ネットワークに関する研究では、ネットワークプロトコルやネットワークシステムの性能評価が広く行われている。例えば、新しいネットワークプロトコルやネットワークシステムの提案を行う場合、一般に、その有効性を数学的解析・シミュレーション・実験のいずれかの方法で明らかにすることが求められる。特に、シミュレーションや実験はプログラミングやコンピュータやに関する知識があれば簡単に始められるのだが、実際には「正しい」性能評価を行うことは容易ではない。本講演では、Raj Jainの「The Art of Computer Systems Performance Analysis - Techniques for Experimental Design, Measurement, Simulation, and Modeling (John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 1991)」を素材として、性能評価とは何か?、身近な性能評価の例、性能評価の難しさ・楽しさ、性能評価の概要、性能評価の手順などについて概説する。 |
| 抄録(英) | This introductory lecture explains the fundamentals of performance evaluation of communication systems to young researchers such as undergraduate students and graduate students. Majority of networking research is more or less related with performance evaluation of network protocols, network systems, and network services. For instance, if one is willing to propose a new solution - network algorithm, network protocol, network device, network software, and network service - for some problem, it is generally required to prove its effectiveness through mathematical analysis, simulation, or experiment. If one has basic skills on programming and/or computers, it is not difficult to start simulation and/or experiment, but a common pitfall in many cases is that conclusion drawn from such performance evaluation is wrong due to several mistakes. Performance evaluation is easy to start, but not to do it right. This lecture covers basics of performance evaluation based on Jain's book, R. Jain, "The Art of Computer Systems Performance Analysis - Techniques for Experimental Design, Measurement, Simulation, and Modeling," John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 1991. |
