Development and Experimental Evaluation of Snow-Blower Support System using Tablet

Abstract(in English) Snow removal activity by snow-blowers is necessary in a snowy country. However, the snow-blower sometimes breaks road facilities because of poor visibility of them caused by snowfall. In order to avoid the accident, a snow-blower operator should understand a detailed condition of the road surface on a snow removal route. In this paper, we propose a new VR navigation system for snow-blowers using an Android tablet which provides no-snow scenery to the operator. Our proposed system displays road surface images without snow corresponding to the snow-blower's position. Through the experimental evaluation, we have clarified that the proposed no-snow scenery, which is refreshed every 1 [sec], is effective for the snow-blower operator. Furthermore, by analysing the log data of the Android tablet, we have revealed a specific area where the snow removal takes a longer time because of the narrow road and densely-built houses.
