A hop-based QoS control method for end-to-end communication in SDN

Abstract(in English) We have proposed a mechanism for extending data plane elements to enabling a network function for QoS control by per-application WFQ. In this paper, we propose a new method for improving bandwidth utilization in network congestion by setting different priorities in queues at network nodes according to the number of hops in end-to-end communications especially for 4K/8K video streaming applications. In general, there is an obvious problem in network congestion that when a packet loss occurs near the destination, the bandwidth for passing that packet near the source ends up being wasted. In order to resolve this issue, we propose a new SDN QoS control method that centrally manages network nodes and set priorities in transmission so that the closer a network node is located to the destination for a given flow, the higher priority it gets for transmitting it. The evaluation of our proposed method by NS-3 reveals that in case of UDP flows, setting gradually increasing priority for transmission as a flow gets close to the destination leads to 53% reduction of the sum of packet loss weighted with hop counts. For TCP flows, at a node before the bandwidth bottleneck link, setting a high priority for transmission to a flow traversing a large number of hops increases the bandwidth utilization of that flow by more than twice.
