Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Human communication always and language often presuppose psychological interaction among participants, which requires mutual knowledge on the situation and the content being discussed. Mutual knowledge, however, is not capable of being verified strictly since a participant would fall into infinite regress if s/he tried to verify it rigidly. So how can a participant get a belief in mutual knowledge? Based on descriptive research on the Japanese language, this paper argues that this belief can be gained not by logical inference but by intuitive awareness. A Japanese participant can have a vague gray belief concerning the mutuality of knowledge, in which case the mutuality varies in accordance with the participant's attitudes and character type. Logical inference does not seem to allow such a possibility.
