A Study on Small-Cell Transmission Timing Control for eICIC

Abstract(in English) The overlaid cell structure, in which a large number of small cells are deployed in a macro-cell coverage area, is considered to be a promising approach in order to accommodate rapidly increasing mobile data traffic. When co-channel deployment is used in the overlaid cell structure, the interference between macro and small cells becomes an issue and it needs to be solved in order to increase system capacity. eICIC is an effective technique to control the co-channel interference. In eICIC, the interference from a macro-cell eNB to small cells or vice versa can be avoided by stopping some parts of the downlink signal transmission in the time domain. Therefore, accurate timing synchronization is important in order to introduce eICIC effectively. Although some timing synchronization methods such as a method using GNSS (GPS) or IEEE 1588 v2 are widely known, it is a common practice to synchronize the transmission timing of macro and small cells. Hence, the terminals at the cell edge between macro and small cells, which receives strong interference from the other cell, experience different received timing from the macro and small cells depending on the distance between the base stations or the cell radius of the small cell. In this paper, we propose a transmission timing control method of small cell based on the distance or the small-cell radius and clarify the performance of the proposed method using 3GPP LTE-compliant equipment.
