Abstract(in English) | In recent mobile/wireless communication systems, most of handsets and base-stations of the systems have been equipped with the multiple frequency band function. Such device or equipment, particularly for the handsets, strongly requires a wideband small antenna which can cover all or most of the operation bands. The authors have proposed one of the ultra-wideband planar antenna for such purpose, which has a simple planar structure consisting of a patch on the front of a dielectric substrate and a windowed ground on the back. The proposed antenna can achieve excellent performance of very large bandwidth over several octaves and stable radiation patterns over the whole operation band, by selecting the dimensions of the patch, windowed ground and a suitable coupling between the patch and the back ground. The operation mechanism has not been clearly solved, however. This paper is aimed to elucidate the mechanism, based on our extensive electromagnetic simulation of the antenna performance, such as return loss, gain, current distribution on the patch and windowed ground, and radiation patterns, for the various parameters of the antenna. The paper will present the simulation and experiment results, an equivalent circuit model for the antenna, and try to give some reasonable explanation of the wideband operation mechanism from the results. |
