Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Previous studies showed that the perceived duration of visual stimuli could be strongly influenced by auditory stimuli presented simultaneously. The present study examined the effects of the sounds that were not simultaneously presented with visual stimuli on visual time perception. In Experimentl, the participants were presented by either only a visual stimulus or one sandwiched by two task irrelevant auditory stimuli, and asked to classify the presentation duration of the visual stimuli into four categories. As a result, two outer sounds were shown to lengthen and shorten the perceived duration, depending on interval between the both stimuli. In Experiment 2, in order to investigate the effects of auditory grouping on these lengthening and shortening effects, three sounds were presented before and after the visual stimulus. The results indicated that auditory grouping could diminish or reduce the effects lengthening and shortening visual durations by sounds. Taken together, these findings suggest that the distortion of visual time perception by sounds can be induced by audio-visual integration, and that intra-inter modal perceptual grouping is an important factor that can alter time perception.
