Centralized Self-Coexistence Algorithm for IEEE 802.22 Base Stations

抄録(英) Currently several countries have opened TV white space frequency bands for use by the secondary radio systems without causing harmful interference to the primary radio systems. Some other counties are in the process of developing radio regulations for the white space frequency bands. In response to the new spectrum opportunities, the IEEE 802 committee has been developing several standards defining radio systems operating in white space frequency bands. The IEEE 802.22 standard has defined a new medium access control sublayer and physical layer intended to provide cost-effective wireless Internet access to fixed users in rural areas using TV white space. In the general case, IEEE 802.22 base stations (BS) operate independently from each other as secondary users. This means that they select their operating channels independently. If two or more BSs are located close to each other and have selected the same operating channel, they will cause interference to each other that may degrade their performance. To cope with such situations, the IEEE 802.22 standard defines self-coexistence mechanisms based on time scheduling. However, the standard does not define any self-coexistence algorithm, that is, how to select BSs that need to coexist with each other or how to select which frames within a self-coexistence frame shall be used by each BS. This paper proposes a centralized self-coexistence algorithm for IEEE 802.22 BSs. The proposed algorithm provides the value of the neighbor threshold to be used to select BSs that need to coexist with each other. Also, it selects frames to be used by each of such BSs. For the proposed algorithm, we provide an example of its operation for a simple configuration of BSs, and then do verification and performance evaluation using QualNet simulation.
