Proposal and Implementation of Feature Detection and Control Method for Brain-Computer Interface Composed of a Smart Device and a Simple EEG Recorder

Abstract(in English) Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) which consists of a simple EEG recorder has problems of a lower S/N ratio and limited number of electrodes. Therefore, it is difficult for the BCI system to detect ERDs/ERSs in motor imagery, ERPs and SSVEP. In this study, a general-purpose controller was proposed and implemented. In the controller, strength of blinks and a β/α ratio occurred when a user is concentrated were detected from signal waveforms measured by the simple EEG recorder. Then, selection of switches and turning the switch on or off were realized based on the strength of blink and the β/α ratio. In signal processing, an arithmetic mean and a finite state automaton were used so as to make the detection stable. Additionally, a multi-command BCI system was implemented by using the proposed controller and a smart device.
