Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Recently, in coherent optical communication systems, 4-dimesnional (4D) modulation formats designed by using two degrees of freedom of the in-phase and quadrature (IQ) components and two degrees of freedom of the state of polarization (SOP) have attracted a lot of attention. By appling set-partitioning in such a 4D vector space, we have proposed the 8-state trellis-coded modulation (TCM) scheme with 4D-QAM constellations. In this paper, we experimentally evaluate the back-to-back bit-error rate (BER) performance of the 8-state Trellis-coded 4D-QPSK scheme. BER measurements show that at BER of 10-3, the 8-state Trellis-coded 4D-QPSK scheme provides 4-dB sensitivity improvement, compared with the dual-polarizaiton QPSK (DP-QPSK) scheme at the same boud rate.
