Abstract(in English) | It was revealed that contents of communication were collected and stored by tapping optical signals from optical fiber cables. Therefore, the development of technology to protect such eavesdropping using the cipher is now an urgent need. Recently Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in the United States is driving the R&D of the cyber security and is conducting the project of the physical cipher, "Quiness", for protecting eavesdropping the information in the fiber communication link. The goal of the project is rather high, the bit rate of 1-10 Gb/s and distance of 1,000-10,000 km. Our Institute has been conducting theoretically and experimentally the R&D of Y-00 quantum stream cipher, a physical cipher, to meet such performance. So far, the authors evaluated experimentally Y-00 performance of the security levels as well as the communication systems. The random cipher nature of Y-00 cipher was experimentally measured as the security level evaluation. In addition, Y-00 transmission experiments at the data rate over giga-bit per second were also demonstrated. We fabricated the intensity-modulated Y-00 cipher transceiver operating at the data rate of 2.5 Gb/s and it was successfully applied to the connection test with the in-service GbE network of our Univ. Moreover the error-free performance of the Y-00 transceiver over 160-km installed optical fiber over two months was demonstrated. To meet the demand of high capacity, we employed the wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) scheme. So far, we demonstrated the 120-km transmission of 40-Gb/s Y-00 cipher comprised of 4 wavelength channels each carrying 10-Gb/s Y-00 cipher with the wavelength spacing of 200 GHz. In this report, we report on the 100 Gb/s Y-00 transmission experiment over 120 km where the number of wavelengths is increased to 10 and the wavelength spacing is reduced to 50 GHz. |
