Standardization on Cellular and Wi-Fi Interworking

Abstract(in English) In order to tackle rapidly increasing traffic, mobile operators need to offload their traffic to other wireless systems. To facilitate traffic offload more, standard organizations are working on developing standards for interworking between cellular systems and Wireless LAN (WLAN) as well as for achieving higher throughput and higher user experience. In the IEEE802.11, new WLAN standards called High Efficiency WLAN (IEEE802.11ax) are being developed to achieve higher spectrum efficiency especially for areas with high-density Access Points (APs). In the 3GPP, inter-RAT technologies between cellular systems and WLAN systems such as ANDSF, SaMOG are being developed to provide seamless-handover mechanisms for smartphones, and Licensed-Assisted Access using LTE (LAA) are studied. In the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA), certification programs such as the Next Generation Hotspot (NGH) and the Interoperability Compliance Program (ICP) are being developed to accelerate roaming service among WLAN operators. In this paper, we summarized current standardization trends on cellular and Wi-Fi interworking.
