Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In this study, we used fNIRS to measure human brain activity during an English listening comprehension task. The speed of spoken sentences was manipulated to control comprehension difficulty. The task was to decide whether paired sentences were congruent or incongruent with each other. FNIRS probes were positioned over lateral frontal, temporal and parietal regions, encompassing Broca's and Wernicke's areas. We applied independent component analysis to isolate task-related fNIRS signals. The results showed that comprehension scores were positively correlated with task-related fNIRS signals in all participants. Additionally, we found that this correlation was stronger for the left compared with right cerebral hemisphere. The results indicate the feasibility of using fNIRS to investigate English listening comprehension.
