Influence of Channel Estimation on Massive MIMO with Joint Analog Beamforming and Digital Precoding in High Frequency Bands

Abstract(in English) In order to tackle rapidly increasing traffic, 5th generation (5G) radio access network in mobile communications introduces small cells using higher frequency bands to expand channel capacity, and aims to achieve super high bit rate transmission realizing several tens Gbps by using Massive MIMO. In our previous work, to simplify the Massive MIMO transceiver, joint fixed beamforming (BF) and channel state information (CSI)-based precoding (FBCP) has been proposed as one of hybrid BF schemes that combine the analog BF with the digital precoding for Massive MIMO transmission using higher frequency bands. In this report, we propose a channel estimation method for the FBCP and evaluate influences of the channel estimation method by link level simulations using 256-element uniform planar array, and the simulation results show that the FBCP with the channel estimation can achieve more than 20 Gbps throughput by using 20 GHz band and 400 MHz bandwidth.
