Abstract(in English) | Optical gain of rare-earth doped fiber amplifier has been an important issue for realizing a compact optical amplification device with low power consumption. For addressing this problem, Europium(III)-Aluminum (Eu-Al) polymer composite was developed by KRI, Inc., and a slab waveguide utilizing the Eu-Al polymer composite demonstrated a high optical gain. It is because the Eu-Al polymer composite could suppress the concentration quenching, although very high concentration (~5 wt. %) of Eu^<3+> was doped in the waveguide core. In this research, for observing higher optical gain, a circular-core polymer waveguide whose core adopts the Eu-Al polymer composite is fabricated using the Mosquito method. In the Mosquito method, the monomer of Eu-Al polymer composite that has an organic group miscible to conventional acrylate polymers in it is dispensed into a cladding monomer of an acrylate resin through a thin needle to form a circular core. The fabricated waveguide is characterized by measuring the insertion loss and the amplification rate. The amplification rate is calculated from the results obtained via the valuable stripe length method. |
