Applicability Evaluation of MAC Mechanism based on Synchronization of Coupled Oscillators on WLAN

Abstract(in English) Wireless LAN based on IEEE802.11 standard uses CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance) for media access control. However, the data frame collisions often occur if the number of wireless terminals increases in CSMA/CA. As a result, the collisions sometimes cause the degradation of the total throughput. In order to overcome this problem, a media access control method based on synchronization phenomena of the coupled oscillators (SP-MAC) has been proposed. We have already confirmed that SP-MAC can avoid the data frame collisions drastically and improve the total throughput in the specified environment. However, it is not clear the performance in other environments. Thus, this paper evaluates the SP-MAC performance considering the number of wireless terminals and several traffic patterns. Furthermore, this paper shows comparative evaluations between SP-MAC and TDMA which is one of typical methods for avoiding the collisions. Then, this paper discusses the applicability of SP-MAC based on the simulation results.
