Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The IEEE 802.11 distributed coordinated function (DCF) adopts carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) as its medium access control (MAC) protocol. CSMA/CA forces wireless local area network (WLAN) stations (STAs) to wait for the random backoff time prior to each frame transmission attempt. However, the more the number of competing STAs increases, the more the probability of the collision increases. Therefore, in congested situation by WLAN STAs, the performance of WLAN system is significantly degraded as the number of competing STAs increases. We have proposed a simple but effective method that enables to decrease collision probability. The proposed method refrains from consecutive transmission and waits for a certain period if previous transmission succeeded. This mechanism can lessen the number of competing STAs and reduce probability of frame collisions. At this point, the length of this waiting period affects the effect of collision reduction and the length of unnecessary overhead time. The effectiveness of the proposed method was measured through experiments. The system throughput characteristic against the length of waiting time and the number of STAs were verified. The experiments verified that the proposed method is able to obtain up to over 20% higher system throughput characteristic compared to the case in which the proposed method is not introduced when the number of stations in a network is 19.
