Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | There have been two kinds of methods to derive the optimal line space to make documents the most legible. One is a method based on psychological experiments. The other is a method based on the model of the human vision's accommodation mechanism. It was clarified that the theoretical ratio of the optimal line space to the character height was quantitatively smaller than the experimental one. This research examines the cause of the quantitative difference by conducting another psychological experiment based on Scheffe's method of paired comparison. Consequently, the following results are obtained: (1) the optimal line space maximizes the average preference value; (2) the ratio of the optimal line space to the character height decreases monotonically with an increase in the character height in the same way as the conventional results; (3) the ratio is located between the conventional psychological and theoretical ratios. These results suggest that the conventional psychological results are lowered and the theoretical results are enhanced relatively, in other words, there is an increasing possibility that the optimal line space can be closely related not only to the accommodation mechanism, but also to the other mechanism in human vision. |
