Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This study investigates whether Japanese ESL learners can acquire English prosodic focus marking. Our experimental results showed that Japanese ESL learners could perceive, but not produce, prosodic focus marking. This phenomenon is an issue at the pragmatics-prosody interface and Japanese ESL learners have difficulty in placing prosodic prominence on a focused element due to the fact that their L1 encodes focus morphosyntactically.
