Modularization of 128-Gbps Monolithic Integrated Silicon Optical Modulator

Abstract(in English) There are growing demands of smaller footprint digital coherent optical modulators for metro networks application. In this report one chip integrated digital coherent silicon optical modulator is assembled in a module with 4-channel driver amplifiers. PN junctions of phase-shifters are driven at carrier depletion mode by applying inverse bias voltage. E/O f_<3dB> response of 33-GHz is obtained with the phase shifters. Mode-field-convertors which expand mode-field-diameter nearly to 10-μm are applied to the modulator chip facets and butt-coupled to optical fibers. Passive insertion loss of lower than 15-dB for C-band and the power deviation of lower than 1-dB are obtained. Round-trip experiments are demonstrated for characterization of the module. Clear constellation diagram is obtained even after 1000-km transmission.
