A Rear-side Wavelength Monitor for 16-DFB LD Array Tunable Optical Module

Abstract(in English) We propose a novel rear-side wavelength monitor structure for a 16-DFB LD array type wavelength tunable LD with unequally spaced rear waveguides. To minimize the spread of the emission points of the 16-DFB LD array, we utilize both of the positive and negative slopes of the etalon's spectral transmittance to monitor the wavelength of each LD. By calculation, the proposed structure achieves wavelength variations of less than ±2.2 GHz for each channel corresponding to ITU-T grid. We mounted the rear-side wavelength monitor with the 16-DFB LD array chip in a package. The measured variations of the monitored wavelengths were less than ±1.2 GHz for each channel. We also realized a small size of 17.9 mm × 9.9 mm × 6.2 mm for the optical module, which is applicable to a MicroITLA.
