Investigation on E/O, O/E sections of Radio over fiber technology for converged radio and optical network

Abstract(in English) This paper describes the analysis of the transmission characteristics on O/E and E/O conversion for Radio-over-Fiber (RoF) of wireless OFDM (Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing) signals. RoF systems can realize transparent transmission to various wireless communication systems, and it is possible to make a simple radio access unit (RAU) configuration. In order to correspond to the increase in transmission capacity of wireless from the explosive growth of wireless terminals such as smart-phone, the increase in a base station and the capacity of wireless communications are indispensable, RoF is one of the effective candidates technology to each. In the conventional PON (Passive optical network) system, main transmission system is the digital by OOK (On-off keying). However, when the analog transmission of an advanced radio digital modulation signal such as OFDM is transmitted on an optical fiber, there are different problems on wireless radio communication as follows. The LDs and PDs used for an E/O and anO/E sections have the subject that a dynamic range is narrow compared with electronic devices. We clarify the degradation of OFDM signals dependence on the dynamic range of LDs and PDs. For OFDM signals with PAPR (Peak-to-Average Power Ratio) of 10.5dB at CCDF (Complementary Cumulative Distribution Function) of 0.001%, we find out the optimal optical modulation index of 20%.
